About the project

Popdeck is a community of skateboard designers. The site runs biweekly contests where users send artwork; the one with enough votes from the community gets printed and ready for sale as a new deck in the site.

Following its rapid growth, they are now launching user stores, as well as running contests and partnerships with Emptees and BustedTess.

Popdeck

Popdeck landing page.

I was contracted to design, from scratch, the look & feel of the community. All pages of the site where needed, including common templates for Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions pages.

Details

Clarity and simplicity were the main objectives when designing this project. Since the user artwork is predominant in each page, the design should be invisible, in the way that it didn’t need to distract the user when browsing, judging and sending entries.

A muted palette in black and shades of grays probed to be the best option for achieving this request, while still suggesting an elegant and strong look.

The Serif

The Serif.

Because we were limiting us to a few visual ornaments, typography was very important. We opted for LucasFonts excellent TheSerif, a versatile, legible and exquisite slab serif.

User Interface

User Interface details.

I gave consistency to the all the site by using different weights of the typeface through the site and in UI elements, such as buttons, titles and helpers.

The site was implemented using Ruby on Rails.
